We recognise that choosing a finish can be very difficult. The table below is designed to help give you an introduction to our products, and their properties. Also - be aware that it may be hard for you to see the difference between some of the finish types.

AFM Naturals: Natural Oil Wax Finish

AFM Naturals Oil Wax Finish is an organic plant-based premium hardener and sealer for unfinished woods. It is an ideal choice for all ready to finish wood, bamboo and other interior wooden surfaces including children’s furniture and toys. It contains a sophisticated combination of natural resins and waxes that together create a durable, water repellent, water-mark resistant finish and sealer, enhancing and maintaining wood beauty and breathability. Safecoat® Acrylacq: Water-based Lacquer

Safecoat Acrylacq is a clear, high gloss, water-based replacement for high solvent content lacquer. It is hard and durable with superior resistance to stains, marring and fingerprint marks. Also available in satin.

USE ON: Wood cabinetry and doors, paneling, furniture, wood railings, vinyl and other plastic surfaces (always test for adhesion).

ADVANTAGES / SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS:

Safely used by and for the chemically sensitive.
Low odor, seals in outgassing from the substrate.
Very low VOC content. Contains no formaldehyde.

COVERAGE: One gallon of Acrylacq covers approximately 300-400 square feet in one coat depending on method of application and surface porosity.

THINNING: No reduction is required, but product may if necessary be thinned with no more than 5% water by volume. Overthinning may cause loss of gloss and may impair product performance.

Our recommendation: we would recommend Polyuraseal for horizontal surfaces like flooring and wood countertops, while we would recommend Arcylacq for vertical surfaces such as furniture, trim and cabinets.

Safecoat® Polyureseal BP: Water-based Lacquer that's Awesome for Floors!

Safecoat® Polyureseal BP is one of the highest quality low toxicity water-based clear gloss finishes available today. Its exceptional durability and abrasion resistance, coupled with high solids, very low VOC and low odor, make it the clear alternative to conventional solvent and water-based
polyurethanes in performance without the toxicity. Also available in satin.
USE ON: Safecoat® Polyureseal BP can be used on unfinished (or properly prepared and sanded previously finished) wooden surfaces such as floors, furniture and cabinetry, and is excellent for gym floors and auditoriums.

Rainforest Sealer:

Uses: Interior / Exterior Decks or Siding, Timber, Log Homes, Wood Trim, Doors, Floors, Outdoor Wood Furniture especially Teak & Cedar, Masonry Surfaces, Concrete Floors, Clear Coat on Cedar Siding

Rainforest Sealer is a high solids, Low VOC, penetrating wood sealer. It is tintable, meaning it stains and seals in one application. The oils and resins are specially selected to create a petrification effect in the wood upon maintenance. Additionally, there are mineral based Ultra Violet radiation blockers and mildew inhibitors built into this formulation. You’ll find generous amounts of Zinc Borate when you stir a fresh can of Rainforest. Zinc Borate is made from Zinc Oxide (suntan lotion) and Boric Oxide. It has been proven to effectively deter wood boring insects, wood decay fungi, algae and aids in defense against mildew.

Many of our customers prefer to use Rainforest Sealer to treat all of the wood on a home, inside and out. By doing this they can deal with one durable product and simply have it tinted to different colors as needed. When using Rainforest as a stain the wood will be fully saturated with the first, most important coat. This makes for fast, effective finishing that leaves the wood well protected (most stains are 95% solvent, Rainforest is 92.99% Resin). For areas that need more shine or protection, a top coat of Bio Poly or Mountain will do nicely.

For Decks and Timber, Rainforest Sealer leaves the wood absolutely gorgeous! Whether it's applied to new wood or old wood that is well prepared, this coating is able to fortify the wood fibres themselves and provide exceptionally long lifecycles. When maintenance is eventually needed the Minerals and Resins will create our signature "petrification effect". This is unequivocally the most sustainable way of preserving wood for centuries. We could say, "It's made from Trees for Trees!" because much of the ingredients are derived from trees. Wood loves of our Wood Finishes because it's essentially trees getting what trees want!

Nanotech

Interior / Exterior Uses: Fully tintable for a one product solution to staining and sealing. Because of the unusual character of this nano resin there is a wide variety of surfaces that can be finished with it. Some would call it a Universal Sealer.

NanoTech is the newest generation of nano polymer science. Its invention allows us coat a wood or concrete floor, four coats, in one or two days! We have always stubbornly refused to use waterbased polyurethane because of the nmp, TEA and isocyanate poisons used in them. With the creation of NanoTech's acrylic nano polymer we have found a way to offer all of the fantastic benefits of a water based polyurethane but none of the poisons. No NMP, TEA or Isocyanates! This extraordinary accomplishment not only means you can safely breath the air nearby when NanoTech is being used but also that none of the offensive odor is present. There are zero free isocyanates in this non toxic, low odor acrylic resin! And it cleans up with water.

Wood Finish: NanoTech is a great replacement for water-based polyurethane. In fact it is far better than any waterbased polyurethane we have ever seen. Wood can be coated exterior as well as interior. The bond strength is amazing. We have coated high gloss, old epoxy without sanding. Bond strength measured an unheard of 700 psi! Testing is always required before coating anything but we have found that NanoTech bonds exceptionally well to glossy surfaces without sanding. Compare to Bona Traffic or Basic Streetshoe 275.

Concrete Sealer: NanoTech is an incredible Concrete Sealer. Simply roll on multiple coats and forget about it. A stunningly beautiful concrete floor is created by machine buffing Rainforest Sealer into the pores as a stain. Pick any color and buff it in. This creates the sweet, variated look that you wish you got from acid stain. Allow this to dry for a couple days and come back and roll on the NanoTech once or twice. Concrete Sealed in this way will last for ages, feel great and be very easy to maintain.

Spot Maintainable: NanoTech has a nano polymer molecular size. This means it is ultra, ultra fine. One of the huge advantages of this technology is that it is so super fine that the human eye can not see it. When a NanoTech coated surface is touched up it blends in to the film so well that it is nearly imperceptible. This means that instead of having to strip your floor you just touch it up. Granted you can't just brush on a heavy coat over a floor that was mopped. That would show but just barely. However, if you use a foam water based floor applicator pad and feather the edges, the product will disappear in front of your eyes! Basically, you can touch up the dining room floor in the morning and have Thanksgiving Dinner on it that afternoon!

Fast Drying: NanoTech can be topcoated in approximately 30-40 minutes. Ordinarily this would mean that the product dries too fast and will show lap marks. NOT SO with NanoTech. This finish lays down so super smooth that even on a gym floor you can mop it on and have no visible lap issues! Even better you can finish that gym the same day and never have to break down and clean up your tools again. The chemical resistant, waterproof film is ready for business in a couple hours after the final coat is applied. Allow to dry overnight if appying four coats in a day.

Square Foot Coverage: You get more for your money with a product of this quality. We typically see this finish cover 800 sft / gallon when mopped on hardwoods. Less on absorbent pine and softwoods, ESPECIALLY reclaimed woods. Concrete Floors that are rolled typically cover 400-600 sft per gallon. This will depend on how thick the roller nap is and how thick the person applying lays the product down. It is very hard to misapply this finish.

Decks: With the creation of this resin many applications have evolved. We have had exceptional performance from the finish on Decks and Siding. Peeling, which is common with acrylic on decks, does not seem to be an issue whatsoever. Apparently due to the absolutely incredible bond strength the nano polymer has to the wood fibers. Additionally, black mold and algae can be easily washed off the surface without penetrating and causing discoloration. This product has only just begun to go through the gauntlet of testing we do on deck and siding wood finishes. It seems likely at this point that NanoTech will stand the test of time but we cannot say for sure until we punish it appropriately and determine its full mettle.

Siding: As stated above in the Decks section we are testing NanoTech to see how much better than pure acrylic the resin actually is on decks and siding. We expect it to last longer and look better. Nanotech can be used in three ways on siding. 1.) As a transparent stain. 2.) Semi solid stain. 3.) As a clear topcoat over Clear Skies Matte, Rainforest or Mountain XT. Siding can be given two to three coats in one day and hung the same day! Since this resin works exceptionally well on concrete driveways we expect that it will hold up accordingly on cement fiber siding.

Stain: Nano Tech is an excellent stain vehicle. All of our wood finishes come clear and then get tinted. We love the way NanoTech stains wood. Our furniture makers have been very impressed with it's staining ability. The fact that boards can be stained, topcoated and hung all in one day is a big plus. NanoTech would be a hard stain to use on large areas like floors because it dries fast and thus could show a lapmark due to the stain overlapping. Instead of one uniform coat, where the overlap occurs the stain would appear as two coats. This is easy to avoid by keeping a wet edge and having someone wipe down right behind you, leaving it perfectly smooth. However, this is hard to do on very large areas, such as floors.

And for all these finishes: Citrus Solvent!

For diluting our Wood Finishes. Pure extract from citrus. Technical grade solvent for mixing and cleaning oil based paints. 3 times stronger than Mineral Spirits, naturally. Not Water miscible.

No mineral spirits / Isopar (Exxons name brand of Mineral Spirits) is added to any of our solvents!

When all things are considered we feel Citrus Solvent is the Earths best answer for safe solvents. The citrus smell allows users to know it's being used and doesn't secretly poison the user like NMP or ethylene glycol do. It's also 100% renewable from orange juice production waste (aka orange peels). It is counted as a voc because it evaporates. This is also good because unlike zero voc solvents it doesn't extend dry time. Meanwhile, the tree remains, steadily absorbing CO2 out of the atmosphere. Unlike mineral spirits the Citrus is biodegradeable, very quickly. We do recommend responsible and sparing use and reuse of this wonderful solvent.
